Hi Hoshies!

So just a few announcements as we bring in the fall season.

October 2nd Hosh will be hosting our first monthly music night. This Saturday from 7-9pm there will be live music, teachers will be available for questions, and you’ll be able to meet some of your fellow students and neighbors in a warm and casual atmosphere. The music will be performed by Caroline and Caroline, two lovely ladies; Caroline Freeman on vocals and Caroline Ritson on harp. They consider their music experimental folk, playing songs that are basically mellow girl jams. It will also act as a fundraiser for us to help generate the necessary funds to remodel Studio 2 and expand classes. Admission will be $7 and the event is BYOB.

So come and bring friends, drinks and a smile to enjoy some great company and great music.
These events will be the first Saturday of each month, so if you or someone you know would be interested in performing in the future please contact Yuuki, yuuki@hoshyoga.org.

So what is Hosh planning on doing with our Space?
Hosh plans to complete renovations to Studio 2 so that we can expand our class opportunities. As soon as we complete this phase, we will be adding Fundamentals classes, and eventually Restorative and Explorer yoga classes. We will also be making some changes to Studio 1 to allow for access to Studio 2. Please bear with us as we complete construction. We hope to have all construction completed by the end of November.

In the meantime, we will be offering a Fundamentals Workshop Saturday October 16th from 12:00pm-2:00pm. $17 if you pre-register and $20 at the door. Co-taught by Hamid and Becca. The Fundamentals Workshop will focus on developing an understanding of basic poses, asanas, pranayama, and a brief introduction into yogic philosophy, To sign up please email becca@hoshyoga.org or sign up at the studio. If you know anyone who has been wanting to try yoga, but is intimidated by an Open Level class, please send them this way.

Also, because of our planned increase in classes, you may have noticed several new teachers at Hosh. We welcome Lisa Wall, Robyn Polo, Alexandra Moga, Emilia Hallquist, Lou Kosak, Caroline Beach, and Christina Rufin to Hosh Yoga!

Thanks to all students who came out for Park(ing) Day NYC!
We hope to see you this Saturday night at our 1st Music and Meet!

Becca and all of us at Hosh Yoga

From the very first time I have heard the singing bowl I didn’t know what it was. Like a magical sound it was all encompassing, coming from an unknown source to me. The first time I’ve heard it was in Shavasana, happy to be alive after Greg Gumucio’s class at Yoga to the People. Taste of a sound therapy completing a wholesome yoga practice.

And for about next two months, going to practice yoga almost every day, I haven’t exactly pinpointed the source of the magic. I am not going to lie, I was tempted every time I heard the sound in Shavasana to pick up my head and see what in the heck was this thing!? But, I chose to observe my emotion rather than to react to it.

Eventually I have found out about the source when somebody accidentally bumped into the table and that big frosty thing have slided, bumped and made a noise. Ah! That’s what it is! It’s not like I couldn’t have figured it out, I almost wanted for the source of this sound to stay a secret, until it was revealed to me by itself; I am glad that I have waited. A soothing tone of the Tibetan singing bowl right from the beginning seemed bigger than any single material object, so I didn’t want to materialize it visually. Calming and at the same time energizing tones of this crystal bowl felt very much real materializing as vibrations within my body.

Now it’s time to choose a singing bowl for Hosh. We wanted one from the beginning, but didn’t have finances to (they are pricey). Within the first month of the studio, I hope we get to the point of getting one. So, now it is the time to choose, but which one!? I personally prefer 18 inch bowls because they give the richest sounds. But how about the tone, the chakra? I have been advised by a gentleman in East West bookstore that happens to have a matching set to get a heart chakra. Right after I have asked the question he was like “Get a heart chakra, you won’t go wrong with it”. What do you guys think? Sound Essence website might be of help.
